As Williamsburg’s correspondents, we were sent to sample the happy hour fare at this new casual Caribbean — mainly Trinidadian —  joint as guests of the restaurant. Although not on the main strip like sister restaurant Sweet Chick, Pearl’s is just one block from the L train Bedford stop.

Pearl’s vibe is casual casual casual so the quieter side street actually helps you relax in the caribbean themed decor.

Our waitress, Rose, guided us through the menu, including  specialty cocktails. Frozen Rude Boy ($8 during happy hour) was our hands-down favorite with a refreshing smooth ginger taste with a strong, not overpowering, bite. The Hot Gyal’s ($12) spice hits you right away, while Pearl’s Rum Punch ($8 during happy hour) is a tad boring. Don’t overlook the juice selection — the fresh watermelon juice ($5) is delightful in the hot humid weather.

Be generous with the table condiments (garlic, tamarind, pepper sauces and chadon beni) to enhance the flavor of the Bake and Shark ($11).  The meat on the  Braised Oxtail with Coconut Rice ($22)  falls off the bone effortlessly with the rice soaking up the rich sauces. Both are must haves.

The good-looking Macaroni Pie ($7) was way too dry once you past the sizzling top layer of cheese. Oddly they served our Stuffed Crab Back ($12) appetizer after our mains – booo! However, the generous amount of lump crab deliciously packaged into the two shells provided more than enough redemption for that service mishap.

Overall, a great casual place to get a taste of authentic Caribbean and unwind after work.
