Elias Corner is a Greek seafood restaurant recognizable by the blue-and-white awning on the corner of 31st Street  just up the street from the Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden, the fun last place I had been Astoria.

There is no menu at all. You select your fresh fish either from the fish case loaded with what’s offered on ice or from the waiter’s description, who — in my opinion — pushes what he has to move! When asked which was the freshest that night, he said suggested the wild Long Island striped bass served as a fillet. From what I understood, the other fish are served grilled whole, leaving the diner to deal with the bones. I ordered the bass.

To start, we shared a Greek salad with shredded lettuce, sliced onions, cucumber pieces, a few kalamata olives, some feta and quartered winter tomatoes ($7.50). The two octopus tentacles ($17) are worth ordering, tender at the thick part, crisp at the ends from the char-grilling. With that I tried a carafe of the Ionos white Greek wine ($12 carafe).

My dining partner ordered the swordfish ($22) whose flavor was significantly better than my striped bass ($25) that the waiter suggested. Oh, mine was fine, but not as succulent and fresh tasting as his. Both were drizzled with olive oil and served with lemon. With that we had some odd thin-cut potatoes ($5.50), sort of thick potato chips – in need of salt.

If you’re in Astoria and in the mood for seafood, give it a try.
