When I arrived at El Rio Grande not knowing the set up, I inadvertently walked into the Texas side of this Southwestern style Tex-Mex restaurant with two section – one Tex, one Mex. I found my friends — who I was celebrating an 85th birthday with — on the Mexican side already nibbling many antojitos and sipping their margaritas, with the birthday gal enjoying a frozen pomegranate one ($11).
There was already, of course, a large molcajete with piquant housemade fresh guacamole with chips ($16.95) on the table; plus calamares fritos (cornmeal coated calamari served with chipotle mayonnaise, $11.95); and crusted and fried avocado slices (avocado fries $8).
I ate some of the guac and ordered my margie as I sat down. I highly recommend it, agreeing with their twitter account boast, “Best margaritas in NYC!”
After a couple margies and tequila shots, we ordered our main dish. I’d recommend the enchiladas de chile con carne (a cheese enchiladas with beef chili, black beans and rice topped with pico de gallo $13.95). Hearty and satisfying. From the table chatter and clean plates of the nine at the table, I knew that everyone liked what they ordered.
If you love Mexican food and margies as I do, I highly recommend a visit to El Rio Grande!
