The second outpost of Bröd Kitchen, a Scandinavian fast-casual restaurant, recently opened on West 4th Street near Washington Square Park. They serve specialty pizza, burgers, sandwiches, salads and pastries that they make in house, or in their large commissary that serves not only their two locations but many other operations in need of prepared foods. In fact, the company was first the large kitchen (AKA a commissary) and then decided to open restaurants.
I’m glad they did.
Upon entering, I immediately noticed the freshness of the food and the cleanliness of the place. I was there as their guest and so sampled lots of different things. From their salad bar, I tried and would recommend the artisokka salad ($7.25) with fresh greens (spinach, arugula), artichoke hearts, chunked potatoes and peas in a light dressing (which I thought needed salt!).
Don’t miss their hearty mushroom soup. So very delicious and creamy, with a soupçon of cream, made with both dried and fresh mushrooms. I’d go back for that anytime ($4.50 small; $6.50 large). I highly suggest a bowl of that with one of their their open-faced sandwiches – Scandinavian Smorrebrod. Offerings that I sampled include an avocado on rye bread with mustard seeds and lemon($3); gravlax on rye bread with mustard sauce, dill and pickled cucumbers ($4); Jarlsberg and ham with diced pear on rye bread with whole grain mustard ($3.50); their take on a caprese salad with tomato and basil on rye bread with cream cheese and balsamic drizzle ($3); and my
favorite melange of flavors — their curried roast chicken ($3.95) on rye bread with cream cheese curry mango sauce and red horseradish ($3.50).
Also good is their gooey grilled three-cheese sandwich with caramelized onions and thinly sliced pears ($8.50). Or try a slice of their pizza made on dough using organic unbleached, un-bromated flour from Italy. We tried the chicken meatball pizza ($3.50 a slice, $25 whole).
Save room for their inviting desserts. We indulged in the poppy seed roll ($2.95), almond croissant ($3.95), blueberry scone ($2.85) chocolate mousse ($4.50), Florentine ($3.85), almond kipferl ($2.85). My favorites were the almond paste filled flaky croissant, the not-too-sweet scone and the light textured, but rich and decadent chocolate mousse.
