The noise was pretty deafening as we walked from an art show in Chelsea into American Whiskey. This lively dark bar, filled with millennials, offers exceptionally friendly service.
Because I was invited to sample their fare, we ordered a wide variety of their offerings. I generally love rare Colorado lamb lollipops ($18), but these were way too fatty for me and raw. They were presented nicely sprinkled with pine nuts and topped with a pansy.
The best appetizer by far was the fried oysters ($18) — crispy on the outside, juicy inside — served with both a remoulade sauce and flavorful kimchi. I’d suggest skipping the salty warm olives with odd tasting hard curds ($5) and toasted ciabatta.
Trying to decide what entrees and which sliders to try, we asked our server. On her recommendation we ordered the “duck, duck, goose” slider with foie gras butter ($7), the beef brisket burger with a tomato slice, pickle slices and Dijon-mayo ($5) and — my favorite the perfectly seasoned and cooked — Moroccan lamb burgers with onion, relish, cucumber slices and a dill-flavored crème fraiche ($6). She also recommended the hearty braised short rib sandwich with salsa verde, picked onion, jalapeños and parsley ($14).
With that, of course, we tried some sides. They were out of asparagus that evening, so we chose the whole broccoli, oddly sprinkled with powdered carrots ($6), the red potato salad with a poached egg ($12; missing the menu-stated asparagus and radishes) and a hefty portion of crinkle-cut fries ($4).
American Whiskey is a fun drinking place, filled with 20- and 30-year-olds who stop by for the booze!
