Ocean Prime, which opened early this fall in the theatre district, offers prime seafood, steak and warm hospitality. I was invited to sample their food and libations; in addition to what we ordered, they wanted us to try many of their offerings, including the specialty cocktails.

The first, Bubble & Berries ($17),  a delicious bubbling cocktail experience — both from some dry ice and the Domaine Chandon Brut —  is not be be missed.

It’s put together tableside, first with the addition of Belvedere Cytrus Vodka and house made sour poured over the dry ice, followed by berries marinated in Grand Marnier and the California bubbly. A sight to be seen and sipped! We also sampled their cucumber gimlet ($16), a refreshing cocktail of Bombay Sapphire bin, muddled fresh cucumber and lime. Good, but not as spectacular as the Berries & Bubbles. I’d recommend the former.

The publicist wanted us to sample the teriyaki marinated perfectly cooked, medium-rare tender lamb lollipops from their lounge menu. I’m so glad they did, as that lamb is not to be missed.

We ordered a bottle of the reasonably priced Rioja ($45), a Spanish La Mancha, Volver, Castile La Mancha, 2012, as the tempranillo grapes can handle both meat and seafood. It’s velvety and smooth, with just enough depth to be perfect with our choices of apps and entrees.

For apps, we first sampled their poached lobster roll with kiwi, masago (roe), pickled serrano chilies to give it a kick plus a spicy mango puree ($19); nicely balanced flavor.

Their land and sea option of two pan-seared sea scallops and slow-braised short ribs over their “creamy dreamy” mashed potatoes ($21) — is their version of surf ‘n turf. A nice combo, but nothing special as opposed to the decadent black truffle mac and cheese. Be sure to sample their  jumbo lump grilled crab cake, brushed with a lemon butter with a color play with sweet corn tartar ($17) — a delicious amalgam of flavors and textures.

When we ordered our entree, I  had forgotten that the surf ‘n turf came with scallops and so we had sea scallops as one of our entrees ($37). I’m so glad we did, as the accompanying Parmesan risotto was irresistibly addicting especially with the shaved fennel with herbs that topped it.

On the side, we ate Parmesan truffle fries ($11); asparagus Hollandaise ($13), roasted Brussels sprouts the caramelized onions ($12).

The only disappointment was the pan-seared grouper ($48) that came over some bits of lobster, tender hand-made gnocchi, spring peas a cabernet-lemon sauce as it was a bit overcooked. Had we mentioned it, I’m sure the kitchen would have replaced it. We did gobble  up all the amazingly tender gnocchi  and had consumed more than enough to satisfy. We knew they wanted us to sample their signature dessert.

Both the decadent chocolate peanut butter pie and their signature ten layer carrot cake ae made in house and are irresistible. My recommendation is to be sure you leave some room for dessert, both are worth the calories.
