I returned recently with a group of my friends to Alison Price Becker’s French-inspired American restaurant on West 18th Street for one of my birthday celebrations.
I shared the tender charred octopus, with grilled sweet shishito peppers, pickled red onion that was garnished with pine nuts ($17) and the market vegetable salad with lots of fresh goodies purchased mostly at Union Square Market. The salad included shiitake mushrooms, carrot, fava beans, sunchoke chunks and pickled red onions all over a bed of greens ($12).
The kitchen (knowing us) sent out their unusual white asparagus tartar ($14) with crisp slivers of the spears, goat cheese, hazelnuts, smoked salmon roe, whole grain mustard, black mustard seeds with lemon. I recommend highly if still on the menu!
Our entrees included three large sea scallops with artichokes, olives, proscuitto, carrot foam plus grilled lemon slices ($33); tender delicate butter-poached steelhead trout with radishes, sorrel and a lemon butter ($31); and NY state spring lamb with new potatoes and spring onions ($34).
We also sampled her roasted carrot salad ($13) with lime, pistachios and oats, a serving of fabulous frites ($8) and roast market veggies ($8).
We all though ogled over and dove into the birthday dessert the chef put together, which consisted of lavender honey pudding, chocolate truffle cake and rhubarb shortcake. I’d return for any of those!
