Found a wonderful place for a meal near Grand Central. Ammos Estiatoria, a Greek seafood restaurant, and a quiet (yes quiet) place to dine.IMG-20111018-00672

Ask the attendant if there’s space upstairs, and walk up a tight winding staircase to a quiet little space — with about four tables — away from the hustle and bustle.

We started with a delicious meze plate, Pikilia ($17) with a scoop each of  tzatziki, taramasalata, melitzanosalata, htipiti, skordalia and lots ofIMG-20111018-00671 pita bread.

And, then an fresh arugula salad with tender grilled octopus, shaved fennel in a light red wine vinaigrette ($24).

For our entree we had what Ammos does best – freshly caught and simply charcoal-grilled whole branzino (also called Lavraki or Mediterranean bass; branzini$28/pound) with wild green ($8). Washed that down with a fruity glass of the Greek Moschofilero, Hatzipavlou Mantinia ($11).

Worth the visit.
