Earlier this month with cause for celebration, a group of good friends and I had a spectacular lunch at Gotham Bar & Grill.
Our meal began with an offering from chef Adam Longworth who I had met in Des Moines at a recent Niman Ranch hog farmers appreciation weekend. The cold house-smoked Tazmanian sea trout was drizzled with lemon aoili and topped with crisp pumpernickel croutons, shaved fennel and celery root, with the flavor of the trout roe underneath adding just enough saltiness ($18).
Our apps included a sweet corn soup redolent of eating fresh height-of-the-season corn with sun gold tomatoes, aji dulce peppers, scallions and crumbled Queso Fresco (part of their two course amazingly priced $25 Greenmarket price fixe menu).
The lemony seafood salad of marinated scallops, squid, Japanese octopus, lobster and avocado was presented with a tall lettuce top hat and a lemon-vinaigrette ($18). I also recommend the unusually flavored striped bass ceviche flavored with bing cherries, picked jalapeno, cucumber, passion fruit adn an avocado cilantro puree ($20).
The octopus was tender grilled and served over orzo flavored with red onion and a smoked red wine vinegar ($24). My favorite was the delicate Miso Marinated Black Cod ($25) with bok choy, shitake mushrooms and sticky rice in a soy lemongrass ginger sauce ($25).
Our lunch ended up stretching to a couple hours and with some of us needing to get back to work, we passed on the dessert. Note to self: be sure to come back again! Great food and service. ,
