Ardesia Wine Bar in the Theatre District had been recommended to me by a couple of foodie friends so I thought I’d give it a try for just a nibble.
I was quite pleased with this fun casual place: good grub, friendly service and affordable happy hour wines.
We sampled both the Pedro Ximenez, Elki, Elqui Valley, Chile and the Spanish Monsant, Cellars Can Blau for $6 a glass – while grazing first on a tri-colored heirloom tomato salad with shallots and sherry vinegar, which we held onto to dip our bread into the flavorful dressing.
Then on a cheese sampling – $30 for a plate of six with accompaniments. (Tomme Chabrin Pyrnees, France, pasteurized goat milk with pickled green bean; Sainte-Maure Wallonia, Belgium, raw goat milk with picked fennel; Hooligan, Connecticut, USA, raw cow milk with homemade potato chips; Pecorino Gregoriano, Abruzzo, Italy, organic raw eve milk; Ossau I Ratty, Pyrnees, France, pasteurized ewe milk with figs; and, Abbaye de Belloc, Aquitaine, France, raw sheep milk with a home made graham cracker.)
We wouldn’t have indulged in dessert, but the homemade graham cracker served with the cheese was so delicious that we had to order the S’Mores dessert made with those.
