I dined with a group of twenty New York City women to celebrate some of their birthdays at 44 SW Ristorante & Bar in Hell’s Kitchen. I mention that as serving large groups at the same time can cause difficulty for some kitchens. The staff was incredibly friendly, but the food was lacking.
I split one of their “Mama Recommends” suggestions and one of the night’s specials with a friend. The chicken 44 ($20) included a penne pasta tossed with goat cheese, spinach, flavorful mushrooms and chicken, so overcooked it was difficult to cut even with a knife! The dish screamed for seasoning. The grilled tilapia ($27.00) topped with tomatoes, caper and olives with spinach wasn’t much better, as both the fish and spinach were water logged.
Service though was friendly enough for me to consider returning when in need of a quick pre-theatre bite. I’m sure anything on the menu would be better than what I sampled.
