We’d been to La Sirena before so we knew exactly which cocktail we wanted and how we wanted the bartender to tweak it. We requested the spice me baby one more time — the blend of Montelobos mescal, Milagro blanco tequila, red pepper chili honey, hellfire bitters and orange juice instead of the grapefruit ($16) with a spicy rim. It was as good as we remembered.

Don’t miss the simple bruschetta ($11) topped with avocado and pine nuts plus a refreshing side herb salad with mint, parsley and basil. Also good is the crunchy farro ($17) topped with watercress and poached pear slices in a reduced wine dressing.

The Aleppo chilies gave enough heat to the loosely free-form shape pasta (casarecce) with chopped broccoli rabe to excite my palate ($20). Also good is the plate filled with a variety of grilled mixed veggies over seasoned amaranth (that was a bit too mushy for me). Those veggies included green and yellow squash slices, halved Brussels sprouts, cubes of eggplant, red and yellow peppers and cauliflower with lemon zest and minced greens ($23).

Talk about hospitality! Our served  poured each of us a complementary sweet ending: a glass of the fizzy Cascina Ca’ Rossa Brachetto d’Acqui, Birbet, Piedmont.

I’d recommend a visit to La Sirena accessible either from the lobby of the Maritime Hotel or by a flight of steps from the street. In fact, I’d suggest making a special trip to try it. It’s that good.
