Mozzarella e Vino is located opposite MOMA on 54th Street, in the space that Il Gattopardo had occupied until the owners Gianfranco and Paula Sorrentino decided to moved the latter up the street in September 2013.

As I was their guest, the manager said he’d like to bring us what he considered the best they had to offer. How could we resist? We started with a tasting of their mozzarella that arrives from their cheese making facility in Italy twice a week (Tuesday and Friday). We sampled the Buffalo mozzarella, smoked mozzarella and creamy burrata (made in Puglia) served along with sliced flavorful tomatoes. Also good is their Sicilian caponata made from eggplant, red and yellow peppers, yellow tomatoes, celery, black olives, pine nuts and capers — a version where you could taste each veggie. With our apps, we sipped the crisp Gavi di Gavi Broglia 2015 La Meirana ($15).

My dining companion devoured every morsel of their large Arancini filled with veal, peas and mozzarella ($14 for 3). What should not be missed are the lightly breaded and perfectly fried calamari ($13) with a tomato sauce with a soupçon of spice. Some of the most delicate fried squid I’ve had.

We were then served a tasting plate with one meatball as we requested ($14 for 3) a small piece of their oven-baked lasagna with pork sausage and white mushroom ($19) and the day’s ravioli ($19) filled with basil, garlic and ricotta, each covered in their fresh housemade tomato sauce. With these red-sauce items and our one entree of their tender braised lamb with mashed potatoes ($28), he selected a glass of Barbera d’Alba 2014 Deltetto ($10).

We still had room to sample two of their desserts, a tiramisu style mascarpone torta and a dark chocolate and almond cake with pistachio gelato. Worth the visit.
