The dining room at Gramercy Tavern is where I’ve gone for special occasions — being welcomed to the big apple by friends and celebrating birthday’s, both mine and friend’s really big ones — savoring the fabulous multi-course tasting menus created by chef Michael Anthony. But the Tavern is more casual and less expensive. Their à la carte menu is great for just meeting some friends and sampling the chef’s fare; and they also offer a 4-course less expensive tasting menu.

Be sure to get there early enough to get a table, as they don’t take reservations.Loved the thin crisp flatbread ($14) topped with some braised lamb, olives, picked peppers, arugula and lots of crispy potatoes. Although I wish it had a bit more lamb, I’d still recommend. A light dish for nibbling with drinks is the unusual presentation of both raw and roasted root vegetables ($12) served with three dipping sauces: a green olive pesto, an herbed ricotta and what was called a caramelized cauliflower, yet I felt the sweetness of the browned onions was missing.

The arctic char, a distant cousin to salmon, came served over lots of fingerlings and crisp celery in a light anchovy sauce ($22). Less flavorful was the interesting squash and mushroom lasagna with crisp Brussels sprouts leaves all sprinkled with pecorino ($18).

I recommend it for sampling the chef’s cuisine, in a casual setting.
