“There is an Italian place in my ‘hood I want to invite you to,” emailed my friend.

I headed to the Upper East Side at 94th Street to meet some friends at Nick’s Restaurant & Pizzeria. Had I not been invited, I would have passed it by, as it — like many places on Second Avenue — is hard to access surrounded by scaffolding and craters housing what will be the Second Avenue subway.

We started with their version of eggplant parmigiana as an appetizer — not piled high layers of eggplant, smothered in cheese and sauce, but delicately fried, lightly breaded eggplant slices topped with some cheese and fresh, tomato sauce ($10 single, $19 family portion).

Next came a pizza – half pepperoni (+$3), half plain with mozzarella, tomato sauce and fresh basil ($20). I was skeptical as my friends raved about the pizza being the best in Manhattan — after all I’d been living in pizza capital New Haven for decades. And so, I was amazed how flavorful Nick’s was with a wonderfully chewy crust as I like it. I suggest the trip past the construction to Nick’s for a pizza. It will be worth it.
