Deciding at the last minute to go out and celebrate the kids’ 12th anniversary, we opted for a local spot, Midway Mercantile, a New American Cuisine restaurant near their home.
We started with their fun Mercantile Cracker Jacks, a popcorn treat with peanuts, scented with Chinese Five Spice powder ($6) and their delicate cornflour-dusted calamari with a sriracha-roasted yellow pepper aioli ($16), each a fun start. We sopped up every drop of the flavorful sauce.
We sipped their sparkling rosé, Hubert Meyer France NV ($26)
I sampled the shrimp & grits, their flavorful wild shrimp in creamy sauce over yellow corn grits topped with southern greens ($34); one had their cornflour-dusted trout in a lemon and caper butter sauce on top of potatoes and greens ($29) and another the flavorful panko-crusted halibut in a yellow curry over coconut rice and spinach ($46). My grandson enjoyed the unusual pizza with sliced pear, caramelized onion, and goat cheese ($18), and my granddaughter the buttered pasta ($6).
The kids, of course, had dessert. One enjoyed the reasonably priced kids’ hot fudge sundae ($5), while the other had a scoop of vanilla ($3). And DJ, our attentive, friendly water DJ, brought a complimentary chocolate mousse and a plate with a lit candle for the anniversary couple, so we could all sing!
An enjoyable local stop for all.
