Over 30 of us gathered at Theatre Row’s Dim Sum Palace to celebrate the Chinese New Year. My ex-expat group had negotiated a Chinese New Year menu ($100 pp) in a private area of the restaurant, which started with shrimp dumplings, vegetable spring rolls and pork soup dumplings, served on our table’s lazy Susan.

In the next round, we shared their palace mixed appetizer, featuring spicy cold cucumber, crispy garlic spare ribs, and cold jellyfish and squid, plus Peking duck.

The food just kept coming, including Hong Kong-style Dungeness crab, lobster with ginger and scallions, steak with asparagus, baby lamb chops, whole flounder, snow peas with garlic, baby bok choy, braised noodles and dry scallop, and broccoli rice.

I missed the desserts, including orange slices, as I was too busy table-hopping, visiting with friends and meeting spouses.
