Before heading to Gene & Gilda at 59E59 Theatre, we enjoyed an early dinner at Amali, a Mediterranean restaurant nearby.
Gene & Gilda at 59e59 theatre is a first for me—the first time I’ve been to the readings of a show that ended up on stage. The show is about the love story of the comedic duo Gene Wilder and Gilda Radner. Although it was enjoyable, the actors were much more animated in the reading.
This was my first time attending the readings for a show that later made it to the stage. The show tells the love story of the comedic duo Gene Wilder and Gilda Radner. While the 80-minute show was enjoyable, I found the actors to be much more animated during the reading.
We started with their unusually delicious roasted carrot hummus topped with harissa, almonds and a touch of heat from a chili oil drizzle, all served with housemade grilled pita ($12) and their perfectly cooked Spanish octopus on a bed of pea shoots, Dutch beans and wax beans ( $27). Both dishes were delightful and not to be missed. All washed down with a crisp Greek biodynamic Assyrtiko Karamolegos from Santorini 2023 ($20).
We then shared a half portion of their Tagliolini al Limone with fresh asparagus, sprinkled with Parmigiano and lemon zest ($28), we each found the half portion more than enough for each of us.
To top off our meal, the restaurant surprised me with a bowl of rich chocolate gelato ($6) since we were celebrating a birthday. We shared it before heading around the block to the show.
I highly recommend a visit to Amali!
