The Chateau Inn in Spring Lake (NJ) where we were staying offered a mid-week special that included a $60 gift certificate to one of a few restaurants in the area. That’s how we ended up at Whispers, a restaurant in the Hewitt-Welington Hotel with NYC prices. But  — with that coupon and being allowed to BYO  wine — it became reasonable.

The “crostini” served as our amuse-bouche was topped with an unusual homemade hummus with the taste of the sweet corn added. Just wish the bread hadn’t been soft.

Our fresh arugula salad included shaved sweet onion, candied pecans, crumbled goat cheese all in a lemon-thyme vinaigrette ($12). My favorite of the evening were the two large caramelized sea scallops ($20) served over a roasted sweet corn and wild mushroom risotto with a charred NJ tomato vinaigrette.

I had never seen such a large (14-ounce) porterhouse cut veal chop ($45) served positioned standing mid-plate, surrounded by goat cheese mashed potatoes and baby vegetables (string beans, carrots, cippolini onions, zucchini and patty pan squash), all  finished with a veal demi-glace. The chop, grilled medium-rare as we requested, was almost too much for two!

We had room for their homemade shortcake smothered in fresh blueberries, blackberries, strawberries and raspberries, all topped with whipped cream ($15).
