In the grand, classically elegant manner of the Downton Abbey era, you now can enjoy a fun afternoon of high tea in the Two E Bar/Lounge at the Pierre Hotel, A Taj Hotel on New York’s Central Park (2 East 61st Street at Fifth Avenue) on Fifth Avenue, right off Central Park.

The Pierre is currently offering a special — a collaboration with Piper-Heidsieck — from 3 to 5 pm on Sundays.  It’s high tea like they are again doing at the Palm Court at the Drake in Chicago.  It’s that charming feeling of being in another era. (Regular tea service is from noon until 5 on Sundays. Reservations suggested).

I experienced the Marie Antoinette Tea ($95 a person) with free flowing Piper-Heidsieck Brut Cuvee, with tiers of savories (the best is the roll of fresh smoked salmon atop mini orange-cream cheese and black bread sandwiches; the other savories include Wild Mushroom and Truffle Vol-au-vents, Smoked Trout and Gruyere Cheese Mini Quiches, and Gougeres with Red Endive filling)  and sweets (french macaroons, champagne filled truffles, dark chocolate finger truffles and chocolate-covered strawberries), the latter enjoyed with a selection of over a dozen fresh teas, each freshly brewed. There’s also the King Louis XVI Tea (at $195 per person) with unlimited Piper-Heidsieck rare 1998.

The Pierre also offers Sweet Tea Service on Sundays, 12 – 5 p.m, with a choice of tea with flaky scones and pastries ($45).
