The publicist for the new Tavern62 by David Burke on the Upper East Side invited me to sample their new afternoon tea; I requested dinner instead to really sample the kitchen’s talent.

We had to laugh as we asked our waiter what was good and why. “I like it,” was his only explanation, so we knew we were on our own.

We chose the pretzel-crusted crabcake ($19) topped with red grapefruit supremes and a whimsical preparation of candied peppered bacon. The crabcake atop perfectly cooked green beans was carefully topped with a raft of pretzel sticks; it needed more crab. The thick-sliced bacon arrived hanging with clothes pins from wires, along with scissors to cut off as much as we wanted at one time. We happily continued to cut off chunks and savor it along with our Sancerre, La Porte du Caillou, 2014. I highly recommend the addicting bacon!!

The Duck Duck Duck, features it in  three-ways — a perfectly cooked and sliced duck breast, an unusual all-duck meatloaf (a waste of good duck!) and a weird fois gras dumpling sporting a bone ($38). The over-cooked, deep fried Peking pork shank ($36) was served with a flavorful shrimp & lap chong fried rice and some crepes. Outstanding are the house-cut fries ($10) and even better what they call farmer fries with bacon batons, shredded cheese, scallions and blistered shishito peppers ($14). I’d go back for those. Also good are the caramelized Brussels sprouts with more bacon ($12).

For dessert, we indulged in both David Burke’s signature cheesecake pops, and a huge chocolate waffle cake with chocolate and caramel sauces poured over at the table. Rich and gooey, the latter is for those with a sweet tooth and  lovers of chocolate.
