A few years ago after a snow storm, I had a memorable brunch at Tavern29. This time, a publicist invited me to come try their new spring menu. It’s s a three-story tavern, with a different feel on each floor with the top a rooftop bar nestled between two high-rise buildings.

Taven29 offers many craft, on-tap beers, but I went for the cocktails that their mixologist Claudio touted!  I liked The 1847 ($14) made with mezcal union, ginger beer, lime juice, passion fruit and smoked chili bitters, but my favorite was the Eno’s Folly with Avion Silver, green chartreuse, watermelon juice topped with a few cilantro leaves ($13). If you like cucumber try the Lady Liberty’s Right Hand with Dorothy Parker gin, yellow chartreuse, Elderflower liquor, cucumber, lime and a crème de violette finish ($14).  All are nicely blended, with no ingredient overwhelming the others.

When you order apps for those drinks, I’d skip the Cajun chicken quesadilla ($15) and go for the breaded popcorn shrimp ($15) that arrives on a wooden plank atop spicy garlic parmesan popcorn. Fun and tasty.

Be sure to try the fork & knife grilled Caesar salad ($13) flavored with white anchovies, croutons and shaved parmesan. Gotta love the flavor of the charred romaine leaves!

We tried the charcoal-grilled duck burger topped with pepper-Jack cheese ($21) and some relish, accompanied by fries also served on a wooden board; and then we indulged in a basket of their Parmesan truffle fries ($7), something I’d highly recommend.

Something else Tavern29 has is a late-night happy hour, weekdays starting at 11 pm Monday and Tuesday until 2 am; Wednesday and Thursday until 4 am.
