Restaurants near Grand Central are perfect for meeting friends from the upper east side. Looking for a place there is how I discovered Sinigual, the contemporary cantina serving traditional Mexican cuisine where we met for a bite.

Our friendly waitress put down a trio of goodies to sample with our margaritas: a sweet margarita butter mixed with salt, sugar and lime juice plus two spicy salsas served with warm tortillas. We asked for more of the two salsas for the chips with our guac.

Since I had three evening tasting events, I only wanted something light to nibble as we got caught up and enjoyed our drinks. My friend had the classic Gold Margarita ($15) with gold tequila, orange liqueur and sweet & sour mix. I had my own version of that drink, replacing the sweet and sour mix with lime juice; the tequila with tanteo 100% agave tequila infused with organic jalapeños. Both were served in salted rimmed glasses on the rocks.

We shared the Guacamole De Molcajete prepared tableside using Hass avocados serrano chiles, tomatoes, red onions, cilantro, fresh lime and oddly sprinkled with cotija cheese. Tasty!

From the service and traditional Mexican preparations I experienced, I’d go back for more for sure.
