A food friend highly recommended Joy Luck Palace on Mott Street for good Chinese. As we arrived, we dodged hoards of people emerging from the place and inside we bumped into the owner.  John apologized that his restaurant was closed for a private party.

Not wanted to let us down, he suggested his friend’s place next door at 104 Mott — Shanghai Heping Restaurant. If we didn’t like it, he said, he’s pay for our meal.

How could we resist?

Our Kung Pao Chicken ($11) — nicely flavored, yet with too tiny chicken chunks and sans any veggies — arrived before any of our appetizers. The dish was fine.

I’d recommend the spicy Szechuan dumplings ($5.95) coated in a peanut sauce over the crisp on the outside, steaming veggies inside spring rolls($5) or the plain steamed pork dumplings ($4.95).

The boneless crispy duck was good ($16), it would have been better with a meatier bird. The flavor of their thick lo mein Shanghai style ($6) makes it worth ordering again.

Our final dish was the Shanghai pan-friend noodles ($8); I was thrilled to finally see some veggies!

And while we were finishing up, John stopped by to see whether he had to pay the bill.

He did not.
