Bonnie:  I know that Carolyn — co-author of my 25-year-old syndicated column, Supermarket Sampler —  always snickers when I mention that I like candy. She has a warped opinion of what dietitians eat. Well, I’m a registered dietitian and I’m saying it again: I do love chocolate and I do like Reese’s Minis Peanut Butter Cups.

I find that mini candies allow me to enjoy candy without over-indulging. Reese’s Minis are no exception. These half-inch candies are the smallest version of Reese’s traditional peanut butter cups. They come unwrapped. No paper cups. Eating one regular-sized Reese’s would set me back 105 calories and 7 grams fat, while a mini is only 18 calories and 1 gram fat. And one satisfies my sweet tooth.

I do like these. Especially the size.

Bryan: Ahh, Ahhh, Ahhhh, Ahhhhhhh…. Though not perfect, that was my written-word attempt at reproducing a choir of angels. You know, that sound you might hear in a movie when a character enters a holy place… that mental soundtrack that must have been playing in Charlie’s head as he first set foot in the chocolate factory. Such a sound is the only way I can paint the picture of my emotional state when I first opened the box that arrived at my door — a box of Reese’s from Hershey’s.

I opened the package to reveal a cardboard box, styled after a giant freight container and decked out with Reese’s colors. This faux massive container carried my first look at the long-awaited (if not announced) Reese’s Minis. The irony of something so small being shipped in something appearing to be so big was not lost on me. Though tiny in size, the Reese’s mini is big news, and flavor that deserves a shipping vessel.

The move to miniature candies is certainly not new. I can still remember when “fun size” first came out, forever dooming Halloween to bite-sized treats; what’s fun about that?

Well, I’m a grown up now and I don’t always need/want a full serving of candy. I’ve been known to eat only one pb cup from the duo, saving the other for later. In fact, if you think about it, most of your favorites probably come in bite-size form, but not Reese’s, not my favorite candy (though this position has been held by a few rotating faves over the years, the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup will always remain #1). Now you might be saying to yourself, “What about Reese’s Pieces?” Well those aren’t peanut butter cups, are they? A Mini Snickers is still a Snickers, but a piece will never be a cup! So, it’s basically this simple: Like Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups? You’ll like their minis. Love peanut butter cups? This is your ahh, ahhhh, ahhhhh moment. Get some.

Eric: I’m a peanut butter junkie, and I will openly admit it. There is not a single day that goes by where peanut butter isn’t a part of my dietary regimen – whether it’s a peanut butter sandwich, or just a spoon digging a giant scoop out of the jar, I love the stuff.

That being said, there is no candy I appreciate more than the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup — my brother is right in his argument that the Reese’s Piece holds nothing to the cup; it’s almost like comparing an M&M’s to a Milky Way – simply an absurd comparison.

I also did a little jig as I opened the package of Reese’s Minis – it was the equivalent of opening a present (that I specifically asked for) on my birthday; no anticipation, just pure exhilaration. The Reese’s Minis are an unwrapped version of the standard Reese’s Miniatures (the candy that comes in the aluminum wrapper). Figure the Reese’s Minis as the shelled pistachio of the candy world; so good that the bag will most likely disappear in front of your eyes. Tragically, this is exactly what happened to my Reese’s Minis — without skipping a beat, I opened the package and started devouring the candy. The minis taste like little bites of milk chocolate fudge filled with creamy peanut butter, and I’ve officially found my legal form of crack.

Peanut butter aficionados unite – the true question is: How will you eat your Reese’s Minis?
