My mother traveled extensively as a young woman and for decades the legend of the amazing mangosteens she had in Cambodia. After I heard they were finally available here, I searched far and wide with no success. Thanks to Bite of the Best for showing me where to find them. And thanks to Melissa’s produce for giving my mother the birthday suprise ever!

Mangosteens should be available in any supermarket that carries Melissa’s produce. If not they are available on line.

I saw you present this product on Studio 5 last Thursday and I was soooo excited to learn that it is finally available in the U.S. I first tasted the fruit in Thailand and immediately fell in love with it (as did the 45 others traveling with me). We must have consumed close to 100 pounds in just 2 days. Contrary to what I’m reading here, to open the fruit we simply pinched the fruit around the center until we had circled the entire fruit, tightly held both halves, and broke it open to find heaven. Marvelous!!! I can only assume this is because we had it at the peak of ripeness and in it’s place of origin.

After reading the comments here, I’m not hoping for the same experience I had then. However, I will buy them even if it is only in hopes of supporting further importing of this fruit. If tasting it the U.S. is the only opportunity you have to eat mangosteen, please don’t judge the rest of us too harshly for LOVING it because we were fortunate to eat “the real deal”.

Thanks for the info. on Melissa’s Mangosteen. It sounded like it is available in most grocery stores, is that correct? If not, can it be ordered online?

My first encounter with a mangosteen was fun, though perhaps b/c someone else did the hard part and opened it for me. It’s nothing like a mango, so don’t let the name fool you; it actually looks more like a plum. But the taste was delish…yes, it’s subtle, but rather irresistible, especially the way it melts in your mouth. However, I must say I would balk at the price….sure hope it comes down.

I had my first mangosteen the other night. And I have to say I really liked it. True, the flavor isn’t super strong, but its taste is sweet and unique. All in all, it makes for a delicious and exotic snack.
