After a day of celebrating my friend’s 29th birthday, we headed out to get a bite to eat. They wanted me to try Meadowsweet, a one star Michelin restaurant and one of their favorite places in Williamsburg, that opened in 2014.

We lucked out, getting the chef’s table right in front of the kitchen, watching the James Beard nominated Polo Dobkin in the kitchen. Stephanie Lempert, his wife, stopped by the table to welcome us. My friend happened to mention that I was a food writer and that we were celebrating his birthday.

I mention that as after we ordered the four pastas from their ever-changing menu as that was all we had room for, Stephanie served up a couple of their also not to be missed dishes. The creamy burrata ($15) with Sungold tomatoes and a Parmesan crisp and the arugula salad over crispy baby artichokes ($16). I’d recommend both.

And I’d recommend each of their nicely flavored pasta dishes. The squid ink noodles come with a chorizo sofrito, pickled peppers and Spanish octopus drizzled with a pimenton aioli ($18). The fettuccine ($17) is also black pasta but this one comes with peekytoe crab flavored with Calabrian chile & preserved lemon. Their cavatelli is with a rich hearty duck ragù topped with ricotta similar to what I recently had at Vinetaria. I liked all three, but my favorite this night was the simple ricotta raviolo ($15, one large one) topped with maitake mushrooms, a parmesan slice and pea shoots.

Hearing that is was my friends birthday, our server placed a bowl with housemade macaroon with a lit candle. How thoughtful, like their friendly service

I’d recommend a special visit to Williamsburg to dine at Meadowsweet!
