Located on the Plaza Level of Chelsea’s Maritime Hotel, La Sirena is one flight above ground so you’re not as bothered by street noises. The tables are spaced so far apart, you almost don’t realize you are in Manhattan until you hear sirens. Not surprising, the Michelin-starred menu from Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich offers foods from various regions of Italy.

Having loved a previous bar menu’s piquant cocktail Spice Me Baby One More Time, our server asked the bartender to add a chli-pepper rim to their new Scream Contest ($16) for me. That spicy drink is a blend of chili-infused Maestro Dobel tequila, Vida mezcal, pineapple, lime and smoked sesame.

For starters, we had the chicken liver toast, with balsamic-infused cipolline onions, topped with mustard greens and crumbled salt cured egg yolk ($15); the heritage pork meatballs filled with golden raisins and pine nuts, in a tomato sauce topped with grated pecorino incanestrato ($15); the red snapper crudo with cucumber, Spanish melon and black rice ($17); and the herbed charred octopus ($18) with peach slivers in a finger lime vinaigrette. Each one worth having.

You won’t go wrong with any of the pastas. We decided to share three of them: the green cavatelli with lamb ragu with spicy Pecorino briciolata ($25) the waiter’s favorite (glad we listened) delicate ravioli all’amatrician swimming in spring onion butter ($23) and spaghetti, refreshingly combined with fresh mint, baby octopus, green chilis and crumbled chorizo ($22).

Save for dessert. This time we had the bombollini e tartufi – that’s  stuffed Italian-style doughnuts, hazelnut gelato, chocolate truffles ($15).

If you haven’t been, I highly recommend a visit
