Today’s front page of the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported that the officials investigating the salmonella outbreak have turned their focus to jalapeño peppers as the potential source of the rare salmonella strain dubbed Saintpaul that has sickened about 1,000 people since April 10. This food poisoning may have contributed to the death of one cancer patient.

Investigators from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are also looking at other ingredients used to make fresh salsa, including fresh cilantro and Serrano peppers. The CDC’s initial blaming of tomatoes led to industry losses of hundreds of millions, according to the National Restaurant Association.

So far nothing is conclusive, with the investigators being cautious before making another public warning.
