I thought it was about time tried David Chang’s hot fried chicken sandwich ($8). After all, I’ve been reading about this spicy thigh-meat sandwich served at the small counter-serve (take-out, too) Fuku shop in the East Village but had not gotten there. So glad I did.

Although there are a couple other offerings (a vegetarian salad or chicken fingers), the sustainable-sourced, habanero-marinated  chicken thigh sandwich is what to order. The large boneless thigh is dipped in buttermilk and a spice blend, then deep-fried and served in a steamed Martin’s potato roll bun spread with a specially flavored butter and served with pickles slices. Ask for the Koreano — that sandwich topped with their shredded daikon slaw ($9). And be sure to add the signature ssäm sauce — made with fermented Korean gochujang sauce — to complete the moist and flavorful sandwich. I had mine as a filling combo lunch plate ($12) that included seasoned potato-wedge fries and a drink.

Just bring your plastic as the shop doesn’t accept cash. Credit cards only.

This sandwich is also available at 15 West 56th and at Madison Square Garden, but I’d keep an eye more outposts of this fast food shop as David Chang may be turning it into a chain.
