Calvisius CaviarThere are some invitations that I just can’t pass up. And one to a caviar tasting at the Calvisius Caviar Lounge in the Four Season Hotel is certainly one of them.

My love affair with caviar began many years ago when I visited Moscow and Leningrad/St. Petersburg pre-perestroika. At that time, very little was edible so my daily fare included black bread slathered in butter, topped with caviar, washed down vodka.

So I couldn’t resist the chance to sample four different 10-gram tins of caviar — De Venise, Oscietra Royal, Oscietra Classic and White Sturgeon — paired with a shot of icy vodka or champagne. Pure heaven. (Available for $99 Friday, Saturday, Sunday throughout the month of December!)

This caviar tasting is available for prices ranging from $19 for 10-grams of De Venise caviar to $39 for a 10-gram tin Oscietra Classic served with blinis, toasted bread and baguette and upward from there. Call for reservations or to discover their specials, which usually include a glass or two of champagne or shots of vodka. The lounge is open from 12 to 9 pm daily.
