You can experience a delicious bit of Denmark in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn at Bornholm, a 
Danish Café & Restaurant… but only through this Sunday. As this is posting, we learned that Bornholm is closing it’s doors after brunch on August 30.
It was 2012 when Lone & Claudi, a couple from the small Denmark island called Bornholm, opened a Danish cafe in 
Red Bank, New Jersey. With that success, last year they opened a second restaurant with their hometown island’s namesake. It offers housemade goodies including the coarse, dense bread made with whole grains baked in their own bakery. I was invited in to sample their fare.
We sat outside on the “beer garden” patio drinking wine, not brew and indulged in their
Danish offerings. We started with the Lapseplatte ($14.50) with pickled herring, curried herring and house cured salmon (gravlax) with mustard sauce. I’d go back for the herring alone! Yes, that good.
Next, we chose the roast beef smørrebrød ($7.75 ), a tasty Danish open-faced sandwich with remoulade salad, all topped with crispy onions. I had wished they served it on the thin bread that we had with the lapseplatte instead of the thick; it was difficult to bite into; we need to use a knife and fork instead.
Don’t miss the crispy fiske frikadeller ($10 for three), cod fish cakes topped with a bit of mayo. Or one of the “planks,” a protein baked on an oak plank & served with a side salad along with mashed potatoes. We chose the salmon. Our other entree was the flank steak ($24), cooked to perfection, served atop asparagus puree along with roasted fingerling potatoes and baby carrots.
Since I was there to write about the restaurant, I requested the delicious sounding sides that came with Laks (salmon): roasted cauliflower and beets with horseradish yogurt. I’d recommend that entree too.
We had to sample the Danish (weinerbrod) for dessert ($3.50 each); we tried both the raspberry and the vanilla along with a Danish coffee ($12).
